Social-Emotional Learning: Not Just for Kids?

Social-emotional learning (SEL) has generally been associated with child development. It is a tool to help children manage their emotions, build healthy relationships and learn to make responsible choices. With SEL gaining popularity, it is believed that SEL is also an essential skill for everyone. SEL embraces age by offering resources to help parents, teachers and lifelong learners on their journey to social-emotional well-being.

What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is defined as the development of emotional competencies which includes; understanding emotion, seeking and making positive goals, demonstrating empathy, forming and maintaining relationships as well as making appropriate decisions. It encompasses five core competencies:

  • Self-awareness: Knowing one’s own emotions and being aware of one’s capabilities and limitations.
  • Self-management: Controlling feelings, cognition and behavior.
  • Social awareness: Understanding the attitudes of other people and how they feel about different things.
  • Relationship skills: Being able to talk and make connections with others.
  • Responsible decision-making: Exercising good judgment and thinking about consequences  in making thoughtful choices.

Why is SEL Important for Adults?

Although SEL programs are primarily aimed at children, they are not limited to them. Modern adults face multifaceted challenges -societal and work pressures, family and many other personal commitments . Strong SEL skills can have a positive impact on many aspects of adult life:

  • Improved Stress Management: Positive regulation of feelings such as stress and anxiety leads to better health of mind and body.
  • Enhanced Communication: Improve personal and professional communication by using and interpreting non-verbal communication and listening effectively.
  • Increased Productivity: Regulating emotions and increasing focus improves effectiveness at work.
  • Greater Resilience: The ability to regulate emotions and cope with challenges leads to better emotional resilience.

How Can Adults Benefit from SEL Programs?

By understanding and practicing SEL themselves, parents and teachers are better equipped to support the social-emotional development of children. They can act as a good example for the children to follow.

Stronger adult SEL skills pave the way for positive and productive communication between parents, teachers and children. This improved communication fosters a supportive environment where everyone can effectively identify and understand children’s emotions.   SEL skills also lay the foundation for positive relationships to flourish.  Equipped with better communication skills and a keen understanding of social dynamics, parents and teachers are better equipped to guide children through conflict and navigate social challenges.

How Can Parents and Teachers Support Children’s SEL Development?

Teachers and parents are among the key people who can influence children’s social-emotional development. Here are some ways to integrate SEL into everyday life:

  • Open communication: Create a safe space for children to express their feelings openly and honestly. Just as adults want to be heard, children want to be listened to and understood. Moreover, this is also a good opportunity to share and apply your own understanding of SEL.
  • Active listening: Pay attention to children’s concerns and validate their feelings. This builds their self-esteem and gives them the confidence to express themselves without being judged,
  • Role-Playing Activities: Practice social skills such as conflict resolution and communication through role-playing scenarios. You can also turn them into charades or game challenges. The goal is for children to practice the SEL skills they have learned.
  • Social-emotional learning activities: Engage children in a variety of SEL activities. This can be as simple as using social-emotional learning books for storytelling, doing social-emotional learning activities during children’s free time, and using social-emotional learning coloring activities.
  • SEL curriculum integration: Schools can implement Social Emotional Learning curriculum programmes that provide structured learning experiences. Finding the right SEL resource is very important so that it is easier to integrate SEL seamlessly into the school’s existing curriculum. Therefore, prior knowledge of SEL can be valuable for educators when evaluating SEL resources.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is not just for children; it’s a valuable skill for adults too.  Parents and educators who are well versed in SEL can be effective in supporting their students and children.  By understanding the benefits of SEL first-hand, they can better guide young people in developing these important skills.
