Parenting in a Changing world

You cannot keep doing or believing in what worked well yesterday in today’s context. The world is fast changing. Does this sound familiar to you?

The world is developing rapidly, and an overall composition of influences and other co-factors is disrupting what we are used to thinking and acting.

As science and technology continue introducing more inventions and solutions, our children are developing awareness and general intelligence faster.

As parents, we are responsible for ensuring we can keep up with everything happening with our children.

Successful parenting in today’s world is becoming a steeper achievement.

Shall we consider the following:

1.   Keeping abreast of technology. With the rate at which technology has been evolving, we cannot choose to ignore it as our children are getting more dependent on virtual tools in many aspects of their lives. These standard tools and resources can often act as a double-edged sword. It is finally an act of balance, and we have decided to embrace the extent of usage.

Familiarizing ourselves with technology applications can help us know their importance and how they can add value. Consider the digital trends and applications that can help our children embrace new learning methodologies. For example, e-reading is not only cooler than traditional paperback books; the accessibility to broader subjects and titles can encourage our children to want to read more. Accessing online digital resources can be more readily than going to conventional bookshops to buy learning and activities books.

2. Maintain traditional practice. While we can get things done with technological support in many ways, it is good to be mindful that we do not rely on them for all we need. It is still an excellent way to talk face-to-face whenever the situation allows rather than constantly shifting to emailing and messaging. Doing homework via hardcopy worksheets, coloring, and art and craft work may also be viable if you can access them. Going to the library regularly to borrow books are still a relatively good tradition to maintain as we want digital devices only to rule some of their learnings.

Without technology, our children can still achieve some of their usual and fun activities. Continuing traditional activities like playing hide-and-seek, family time for board games, and jigsaw puzzles continue to rejoice our children have simple fun.

3. Encourage and embrace their opinions.
Let our children tell us what they think or want. The internet age enhances the flow of information rapidly. It is important to listen to their feedback to get in touch with what they have learned or know. Paying attention to their views and probing them to let us know what the better approach before could be making any decision. Accepting their suggestions and choices can significantly affect their thought process development and general confidence.

4. Promote physical and mental toughness. Our children can get influenced faster than we expect with their accessibility to information and new knowledge. Letting them learn through exploration and educating them to take knocks and face uncomfortable results can aid in building their mindset and mentality. The rules and requirements of parenting are fast changing. At work, we need to evolve ourselves frequently with new introductions. When we deal with our children at home, we can also expect they are learning new and better things faster with technology. Keeping an open mind allows us to keep up with their learning pace and adaption.
